Valletta NYE 2012 - Countdown from Shadeena on Vimeo.
The very first projection mapping that was done on the facade of the Grandmaster's palace was designed by Shadeena, which are a local design company. The projection did not have a particular story to tell, it was more inclined towards a visual show. Different 3D elements where used, however, they did not hold any theme related to christmas or the new year in particular.
There where some faults that reduced the quality of the projection like a crane that was standing in front of the facade itself, thus obstructed part of the projection. Also since the windows where not covered the projection was cut out since it was not visible due to the fact that the windows are very dark. Also the architectural features of the palace itself where not used to enhance the projection mapping, thus the facade was ultimately used just as a canvas.

2013
In 2013 the task of creating a projection for the Grandmaster's palace facade was assigned to MCAST degree students which in my opinion carried out the task successfully. The theme they followed was related to christmas and the festive season and also included some maltese elements to make it more locally focused. I think it was received very well by the public and everyone enjoyed the show from small children to elderly people.
They used both 2D and 3D elements and there where also parts which where filmed and included into the projection (new year's special edition). The graphics included where pleasing to see and the light, effects and transitions included was the magic trick to package it all up.
The only thing about it was that there where quite a number of different styles included rather than a one holistic style throughout the projection. This was maybe caused by the different ideas polled out by different groups of students. Also the concept behind it all was a bit too hidden, thus one might think that it doesn't tell a story but inclines more to a visual show with a christmas theme. However, the fact that they used the facade not only just a canvas, takes this projection one step further.
